Iuliia Kinshova - Akdeniz University (Turkey, Antalya)

Hello everyone who is planning to be an Erasmus student in Turkey or somewhere else. As I spent whole year being an Erasmus student in Turkey (Antalya) and still living and working there, I’d like to tell you briefly about this amazing country and city.

I studied at the Tourism Faculty, so I decided that Antalya would be perfect place for me and my profession, because it is one of the best tourist places in Turkey. I came to Antalya in September 2011 just for one semester, but after the first semester I understood that I don’t want to leave this place and tried to do my best to stay there for the second semester and I did it, first from WSG who studied by this program during two semesters. It was great, bright and unforgettable time!
And now let me tell you some details about life and studies in Antalya.

City and Climate

Antalya is situated on the Mediterranean coast of southwestern Turkey, so it has the Mediterranean climate with very hot and dry summers and mild and rainy winters. But, as we know, the 1st semester starts in September and the 2nd semester finishes in June, so you will not feel all this heat in July and August, but in May, June, September and even sometimes in October, still it is very hot, but don’t worry, because you can go to the beach whenever you want and spend your time lying on the beach with your friends and drinking some cold drinks!;)

Things you should take with you

Talking about the clothes…..doesn’t matter if you go for the 1st or 2nd semester, anyway you will need some warm clothes, because since November till April, it is quite cold, especially during the winter months. So apart from the light T-shirts, shorts and dresses, take some pullover, coat, jeans, scarf, gloves and boots. You can also take some notebook and pen, because don’t forget that you are going to study there!:) You will also need an umbrella, because after hot and dry months the rainy days start. And, of course, take your lap-top with you, because you will always need it for your lessons.

Studies

First you should choose the subjects which match the subjects at your Polish university, write them down in your Learning Agreement, agree it with your coordinator in Turkey and send it to your coordinator in Poland. I studied in the Tourism Faculty and we could also choose some lessons from other Faculties, for example, Sport Faculty, so except for the subjects connected with tourism, I had lesson of sport massage, other students chose scuba diving, swimming or fitness. So if you want to diversify your studies, you can do it too.

Accommodation and Food

Speaking of the accommodation, I can say that you should start looking for it at least 1 month before you will go there. But it is not difficult, because Turkish students, who is responsible for Erasmus students, we call them “Buddies”, will help you. They will find you in Facebook and offer you some flats. Or you can find them yourself via those links: http://www.facebook.com/groups/akdenizerasmus/?fref=ts

As a rule, all students, who studied in Akdeniz University, lived in the districts close to the University. The most popular street is Meltem St., so you will live there likely too. All students share the flat with other students, because it is cheaper and not boring, so you will live with 2-4 people more (it depends how many rooms will be in flat). The prices are different, but in average it’s about 250-300 TL per person ( 1TL is about 1.7 zl. ).
The prices for food are not high, especially for fruits and vegetables, 1-2 TL per kilo, so I advise you to start healthy way of nutrition and eat more fruits and vegetables – cheap, useful, delicious and healthy!

Language

Of course, if you don’t speak Turkish, you may have some problems with explaining what you want in shops or outside, but don’t worry, many people speak English there, so you will not have big problems with it. At the university you will speak in English and you will have many Turkish friends who will always help you to solve some problems, if you will have them, so if you need something, don’t shy to ask them for help! And you will have Turkish course as one of your lessons, so you will learn some basic words and expressions which will help you.

Transport

The price for the ticket in bus is 1.75 TL, but all students make bus cards with discounts, so if you have this card, you will pay less than 1TL. Just ask your friends or Buddies and they will help you to do it.

Work

If you are planning to find some part-time work there, you can try to do it, for example in some restaurants or bars, some students do it and I worked in a restaurant too. But don’t forget that because of work you may miss many parties, meetings with friends and trips, so it’s up to you, but I advise you instead of working just to economize your scholarship and enjoy your student life there as much as possible!
But if you are planning to stay in Antalya after Erasmus and connect your life with this city, like me, you can go to the places you want to work in, speak with managers, give your CV’s or just send them by e-mail.

Important things

Try to make ready all necessary papers for your University and for Residence permit during first 2 weeks after your arrival, because if you will be late with it, you may have problems.

So, my friends, I think the questions I told about are the most important for you at the moment, the rest you will learn yourself or from your coordinator when you will come to Turkey. But if you will have some other questions, you can contact with me in Facebook (Yulia Kinshova) or just send an e-mail: yullianna-asksky@mail.ru

Good luck and enjoy your “Erasmus life”!
